Diabetes and Diversity

This session will include three presentations focusing on gender affirming healthcare in diabetes.

About the Speakers:
Dr Rachel Johnson MB BS, FRACP, originally from the UK is a general paediatrician and Adolescent Health physician working at CMDHB Centre for Youth Health.  We are a multidisciplinary team who provide gender affirming healthcare to young people and families across the whole of the Auckland region.  Rachel has been involved in trans health care for over 10 years and in that time has been a member of ANZPATH, WPATH, and attended international training and conferences on trans health care.  She has played an active role on the Auckland regional clinical trans health peer network, the Northern Region Transgender Clinical and Consumer Advisory Group (NRTCCAG) and supported the development of both local and Aotearoa trans health guidelines.  Rachel is passionate about sharing this knowledge with other health professionals and the wider community with the goal of continuing to improve gender affirming health care throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

Dr Kayla Mackie DClinPsych, is a clinical psychologist based in Hamilton, with an interest in supporting gender diverse people to access gender-affirming care, and supporting families of gender diverse young people to understand and be there effectively for their children as they explore and express their gender identity.  Kayla works from an informed consent perspective, with the aim of increasing timely access to necessary treatment options based on each person's unique expressed identity, and encouraging acceptance and celebration of diverse identities in schools, workplaces and society in general.

Dr Brian Corley MB BCh BAO, FRACP, PhD, is an Endocrinologist and Informatics Analyst at Capital and Coast DHB, where he sees transgender clients.  He studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and later completed his PhD in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Otago in 2018.  He has published on alternate sites of wear for CGM sensors, the use of protein ratios for management of T1DM, intermittent fasting and its effect on hypoglycaemia, and resting metabolism response to intermittent fasting.
